Kids have all the fun. October 31st rolls around each year, and they get to dress up and go running from house to house collecting candy. Imagine if we could all do that? At least there are parties for those of us who like to go all out with costumes. There's always the thrill of scaring the daylights out of trick-or-treaters at our front door too. The "begging for candy" part is where we really miss out though. Buying plenty of candy for the big day (so that there is some left over, of course) is one way to compensate.
Daydreaming about Halloween has us pondering a few things. If we adults were allowed to go trick-or-treating, what would be different? Our costumes would be really creative, our candy bags would need to be more stylish, and the candy that we garner would also be taken up a few notches. Not that we don't need a peanut butter cup fix every now and again, but let's think big here, people!
Imagine pouring out the contents of your candy bag to discover that you have scored nothing but the finest in chocolates. Yes, our costumes are good, we are very polite when we ring the bell, and we feel like we deserve nothing but the best. So, let's go with that... In our neighborhood, there is a favorite chocolate shop called Cacao that stocks the types of chocolates we deem worthy of our dream candy bag. They sell chocolates from around the world, including chocolate bars from many craft producers, selections from the best regional chocolatiers and their delicious house-made drinking chocolates. Our dream bag is filled with some of the best goodies that they have to offer. Yum!
In this scenario, gone are the days of grocery sacks or pillow case candy bags. If you are going to be scoring some good loot, why not make a custom cloth tote to carry your goodies in style? Something that you'd like to carry any day of the year. Size it to your preference, with colors, materials and details that suit you. For this dreamy occasion, we are sharing instructions for how to make your own tote. We dare you to take a stab at it... nah, just kidding. Have fun with it. You don't even have to make it a Halloween exclusive.
Making this bag is simple. Like anything else, it just takes patience and some creativity when selecting your fabrics and details. The important thing is to choose fabrics that are stiff enough to withstand the rigors of a tote. We suggest using denim, canvas or some other heavy material. It will also be easier if you make sure the lining fabric and the outer fabric are very comparable in weight and feel. It is also okay to use the same fabrics for outer and lining. Although you may want to follow this tutorial closely the first time you make it, we encourage you to modify the dimensions and details to your liking in the future. Take liberties with your material choices. Change the handles. Add inside or outside pockets before sewing the pieces together. Add leather details. Or a tassel. Make it work with your life. This Halloween night, our tote is filled with chocolates from Cacao. What you fill yours with now and throughout the year is completely up to you. Knitting supplies, magazines, workout clothes? Nevertheless, here's to trick-or-treating in nice weather, in a neighborhood where the houses are really close together and the generous owners hand out full-sized treats.
