Happy Mother’s Day, gorgeous. Whether you are giving or receiving Mother’s Day love, it is wonderful to pause and reflect on the amazing gifts of motherhood. Because life literally couldn’t happen without moms. We especially want to send love out to our own moms, who continue to shape our lives in countless ways.
The two of us at Thread & Whisk are midway through our careers as moms. The oldest T&W kid takes off for college this Fall, and the youngest officially became a teenager last month. There are plenty of life experiences ahead of us, but what we've learned so far about being a mom is that the most special moments often involve the simplest of pleasures. The same goes for Mother’s Day. A sweet gift is always appreciated, but everyone picking up their dirty socks on the same day can be pretty cool too.
In celebration of Mother's Day, we wish you happiness in the simplicity. Take your moments of grace where you can find them.
In our mom village, each person has her own superpower. For example, our friend Kerri is a compassionate caregiver, a focused taskmaster, and an especially heartwarming hostess. She does it all without getting her feathers ruffled. Not long ago when she hosted a moms get-away, she added a special touch to every element of our visit, including the pitcher of “sassy water” she made and kept close at hand. An infusion of ginger, mint, cucumber and lemon, this simple flavored water makes the ordinary more extraordinary, so it is our inspiration today.
Since you might be in a celebratory mood this week, Thread & Whisk is sharing an even sassier water. We infuse a simple syrup with cucumber and combine it with the rest of Kerri's favorite ingredients. Then it's topped off with bubbly water and a touch of gin. It's refreshing and cool, just like you. Whether you take your water up one notch or two, we hope it shines light on a moment of grace that you and the special moms in your life deserve.
Just take it easy and have a great Mother’s Day.
Kerri's Sassy Water
Slice up a cucumber, about an inch of fresh ginger root, and a lemon. Add the ingredients to a large pitcher along with a few sprigs of fresh mint and fill the pitcher with filtered water. Refrigerate for several hours or overnight to allow the flavors to infuse. Pour over ice. Want to add extra sass to your garnish? Freeze some of your ingredients in ice cube trays. Any flowers that make it into your garnish (like these lilacs from our garden) should be non-toxic and pesticide-free. (While our Kerri is the definition of the perky and smart, Cynthia Sass, former Prevention nutrition director created the official version of this drink.)
SASSIER Cucumber-infused Cocktail
(makes 2 servings)
2 oz (1/4 cup) gin
2 oz (1/4 cup) cucumber simple syrup*
1/2 oz (1 Tbsp) lemon juice
1 tsp coarsely chopped ginger root
20-ish mint leaves
ice (plus additional for serving)
Garnish with cucumber, lemon and mint
*Cucumber Simple Syrup
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup water
1 cup peeled and chopped cucumber
To make cucumber simple syrup, combine sugar and water in a small sauce pan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Stir to dissolve sugar. Add cucumber and simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Strain through a mesh strainer. Transfer to a glass jar and refrigerate for multiple uses.
To prepare the cocktail, combine all the ingredients, except sparkling water, in a cocktail shaker or a large jar with a lid. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds. Strain into two glasses. Add more ice and top with sparkling water. Garnish as desired.
Extra Sass in the Garnish
Persian or English cucumbers sliced thinly on a mandoline work well, since they have tiny or no seeds. Freeze some of your garnish ingredients with water in ice cube trays. Thinly sliced lemons or individual mint leaves look great and add flavor to the drink as the ice melts. Any flowers that make it into your garnish (like these lilacs from our garden) should be non-toxic and pesticide-free.
